The contrasting cultures of the SHANGAAN and NORTH SOTHO, combined with that of the VENDA people and their interaction with the settling Dutch (‘Voortrekkers’) and early gold pioneers form a fascinating and essential part of South Africa’s history. 

 

 

Join us in exploring, not only the history of the last few hundred years, but also an eon of evolutionary and social development. Geologically the area is also home to some of the oldest rock in the world, dating back to over 3,5 Billion years ago. ‘THE SHANGAAN CULTURAL EXPERIENCE’

The local Shangaan nation are of the Nguni people who established themselves in this area after their leader Shoshangaan lead his people away from the Zulu nation and King Shakas tyranny. Share in the historic culture of these wonderful people with a visit to Nyani village. Axon, who is the grandson of Chief Kapama, will show you various aspects of their fascinating life style and traditions before you share dinner with his family. (Maybe the Sangoma will even ‘throw the bones’ for you!)  A really special tour for any international visitor interested in our diversity of African cultures. In order to fully understand the Shangaan way of life guests may spend the night in a traditional hut if they so wish.

 

‘CAPRICORN AND THE GARDENS OF THE RAIN QUEEN’

The culture of the Venda people combined with the ancient history of the KrugerNational Park. Magoebaskloof  and the legendary Rain Queen of Modjaji all form portion of this delightful tour through the ‘Tropic of Capricorn’

 

Day 1 – Enter the park from Phalaborwa and explore the area in Kruger which, apart from being home to the biggest Elephants in Africa, is steeped in ancient history. We include a visit to the Masorini Museum. O/N LETABA CAMP

Day 2 – A pre dawn wake up with coffee and rusks before a dawn game drive and breakfast. Today we explore further afield as we cross the Tropic of Capricorn in the Kruger on our way to Thoyando in the land of the Venda. In the evening we experience the Venda maidens perform the legendary ‘Domba dance’ (Dance of the Python) O/N SHILUVARI LAKESIDE LODGE

Day 3 – Our visit to the land of the Venda people includes a tour to Lake Fundusi before we travel to Giyani and on to the Cycad forest of Mojadji. Then on to Magoebaskloof with a visit to the beautiful Debengeni falls. O/N MAGOEBASKLOOF HOTEL

Day 4 – After breakfast we descend via Georges Valley, Tzaneen and on to the giant Baobab tree (Historically used as a Bar and Post Office) before arriving at the airport for your flight.

 

‘THE GREAT NORTH, IT’S ARTISTS AND CULTURES’

Designed to depart from central Kruger lodges or Phalaborwa or Hoedspruit airports, this tour offers an in depth experience of the people and beauty of far Northern Limpopo Province.

 

Day 1 – After a midday departure we travel north to the Letaba river valley and via Giyani o the Missionary village of Elim, home to the historic hospital. We visit the artists in this quaint town before checking in at the lovely Shiluvari Lakeside Lodge. O/N SHILUVARI LAKESIDE LODGE

Day 2 – A full day meeting the colourful people of Venda in the Thoyando area below the towering Soutpansberg. We include a visit to the sacred lake Fundusi (weather permitting) before we return to Shiluvari for a cruise on lake Albasini. O/N SHILUVARI LAKESIDE LODGE

Day 3 – Today we visit the land of the legendary “Rain Queen” with a visit to the unique cycad forest. The Debengeni Falls, Sapekoe Tea Estates and Magoebaskloof (form portion of this day) before arriving at Magoebaskloof Hotel for dinner. O/N MAGOEBASKLOOF HOTEL

Day 4 – After breakfast and a visit to the lovely hamlet of Heanertsburg we travel to the lowveld via Georges Valley with a visit to the historic giant baobab tree before proceeding to the airport or chosen lodge.
